We've
used AutoDesk products for many years and we're not
alone as their AutoCAD and other design software programs seem
to be used by about 90% of the CAD users on the planet. There
are, however,
many other great CAD programs to choose from these
days that are quite inexpensive. Here are several decent CAD
"shareware" packages for you to download that are all quite adequate
for
the average woodworker who wishes to layout his projects on his home

Files for Woodworkers
is exactly what the
name
would imply, but so much better than you could have guessed! Hosted
by Loren Hutchinson, the site features hundreds, maybe even thousands
of CAD symbols for such
items as mouldings, router bit profiles, tenons, dovetails, spindles,
feet, knobs, lots of hardware, and more than I could possibly list
here.
There's also a nice collection of jig designs. Some of the CAD files
are
in .dwg format but most are in the widely used .dxf format, which will
work with most any CAD program. I honestly don't think there's a better
source of CAD related information available on the Internet! I was so
impressed and excited with the content of this site when I first
stumbled
across it that I spent at least two hours just clicking and downloading
drawings. If you are a CAD user, let me just say that you have been
warned! :-) |

FINALLY!! A
shareware CAD program for the Macintosh!! Thorsten
Lemke, the creator of Graphic Converter, has made his CADintosh program available
for download.
SoftSource
has make it easy to publish and access AutoCAD drawings on the Net!
Their DWG/DXF plug-in lets you view AutoCAD and DXF drawings, and their
SVF plug-in (Simple Vector Format: a file format developed jointly by
SoftSource and NCSA) supports CAD and general-purpose graphics formats.
Both plug-ins include single-download navigational capabilities and
scalable vector graphics. Thus, the zoom, pan, and layer visibility
controls of both make it simple to explore complex CAD drawings online.
Let me tell you people - this plug-in will revolutionalize the way we
exchange drawings and plans acrocc the internet!!
Even
though all the CAD programs available here are quite popular,
the favorites seem to be Tommy Software's packages. I used to keep
copies of these files right here on my disk, mainly so I could keep
track
of how many copies were going out from this page. But the upgrades seem
to
be coming faster than I can keep up these days! Therefore, I will start
pointing you directly to the Tommy Software

• I had been passing out copies of the various versions of "Draft
Choice" for some time now without really knowing much about where they
cam from or who was responsible for their creation. Sometime ago I
received a nice letter from the people at TRIUS, Inc.,
who produce these programs and if you want more information you should
go to their site. You can get the latest versions of Draft Choice (and
other shareware programs), the latest FAQ files, and other useful
information.
